Abstract

A temperature-responsive actuating mechanism, for performing an actuating operation remotely from where the temperature is detected, consists of a metallic compression spring 12 of a shape memory effect material having an elastic modulus which varies significantly with temperature in a reversible manner over a transition temperature range; a remote-control link, e.g. a Bowden cable or a hydraulic line, connected at one end to the element and at the other end to an actuating device; and a bias spring 25 acting on the link remotely from the element and applying a resilient bias through the link against the compression of the memory spring 12. <IMAGE>
