Abstract

A transmission unit for a vehicle axle having two crownwheel and pinion sets 24, 26 and 25, 35 and bevel differential gearing between the crownwheel and pinion sets, the differential gearing being offset to one side of the crownwheel and pinion sets, the wheels 24, 25 being driven respectively by the differential side wheels 21, 22 through shafts 23, 32, and the differential casing 17 being driven by the input 16. Instead of the axes 43, 143 of the output shafts 27, 36 being parallel and offset they may be in alignment but inclined to the axis of the shaft 23. A modified arrangement for inter-axle use incorporates two differential gearings. <IMAGE>
