Lantern panes and panels.-In an illuminated sign or signal for use in street lamps, &c., ribs, corrugations, and like projections are formed on part of the surface so as to throw the light in a particular direction, and other parts of the surface are darkened or obscured. As applied to a hollow red triangle motor signal, the corrugations b, Fig. 1, are on the side toward the light source, and are arranged in six groups, one group at each corner of the triangle at right-angles to the corresponding median of the triangle, and one group at each side parallel to the side. The corrugations b are on the inside, and are preferably of saw tooth section with the steep side towards the light source. The centre part c of the triangle is made opaque, or nearly so, and may be provided with a system of flat or curved mirrors, which may be put in motion, to throw the light falling on such part on the sign. The corrugations b may be circular and concentric with the triangle, and may be separated by spaces of flat glass, or replaced by isolated projections g, h, i, Fig. 7, of conical, pyramidal, or like shape, which may be arranged to form letters or figures. Marginal ribs are formed on the sign, and may be strengthened by wires embedded therein. The Provisional Specification also states that the sides of the triangle may be formed of parallel glass rods, and that the device may be in the form of letters &c. instead of triangular. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 3673/85.
