Abstract

A process and system to dry wet sewage sludge with hot sand and to burn the dried sludge. The sand is heated in a heating device (22) by burning dried sludge at 24, and the hot sand is mixed with wet sludge in a drying device (26). Thereby moisture is driven from the wet sludge to dry it. The dried sludge and sand are separated at 30, and the sand returned to the heating device (22) while the dried sludge is burned at 24 to heat the sand. The wet gases from the drying device (26) are passed through a condenser (38) to the burning zone (24). After heating the sand the waste gases pass through cleaning devices to a stack. <IMAGE>
