Abstract

An amperometric electrochemical sensor having two electrodes includes a body, (21) a cathode (34), mounted within a support member (30) by epoxy- seal (39) and electrically connected by an electrolyte (43), and a gas-permeable membrane (29) fixed by O-ring (28) extending across one end of the body and separating the electrodes and the electrolyte from a gas sample to be analyzed. The sensor configuration determines membrane tension and establishes a conical membrane geometry so as to maximize the speed of the response of the sensor, to enhance span stability, and to provide an output which is linear over a very wide dynamic range. The end of cathode (34) in contact with membrane (29) has a diameter in the range 0.01 - 0.08 inches and a surface radius greater then 0.2 inches, extending through support member (30). The end of cathode (34) extends co. (0.005 - 0.045 inches) beyond the surface of the support member. <IMAGE>
