Abstract

1499651 Sulphur dioxide sensor DRAGERWERK AG 18 Nov 1975 [.18 Nov 1974] 47569/75 Heading G1N An electro-chemical sensor for determining sulphur dioxide (preferably in the presence of oxygen) comprises two electrodes, both contacting an electrolyte, the first electrode comprising carbon where it contacts the gas and the second electrode, when the electrodes are connected to a device for measuring current between them being substantially non polarized in operation and having a potential more positive than that of the first electrode. The first electrode carbon is preferably artificial graphite of surface area 1-20 m<SP>2</SP>/g. The second electrode may comprise platinum or a reversible redox system using an acid-insoluble organic species such as a quinone; chlorinated and/or condensed diphenoquinones being preferred. The electrodes may be rendered hydrophobic on the side which contacts the gas by, for example polytetrafluoroethylene. The electrolyte is a strong acid such as perchloric, phosphoric or sulphuric. It may be immobilized in, for example, micronized silica. As shown, carbon first electrode 3 and platinum second electrode 4 are electrically connected by current measuring device 5 and contain electrolyte 2 between them. A gas mixture 6 flows past the cell as shown by natural convection.
