Abstract
When a power failure leaves a cable operated lift stranded between two floors an emergency leveling device is called in to play to displace the lift-car to one of the two floors. The device comprises means 7 for generating from the D.C. supplied by an accumulator battery 5, both a three phase A.C. supply for a three phase main drive motor 1 which turns the cable winch of the lift, and a single phase A.C. supply for the lift winch brake control 16. The device operates to determine which direction of rotation offers the drive motor the least resistance by automatically driving the motor first in one direction and then in the other and sensing in which direction the motor current is least. The motor is then driven in this direction to displace the lift-car to one of the two floors. <IMAGE>
