Abstract

A fuel pumping apparatus for an I.C. engine includes an injection pump to which fuel is supplied by a low pressure supply pump 27 via a rotary distributor 11 and a shuttle 38 located in a cylinder 37. One end of the shuttle is intermittently connected to the injection pump working chamber via a passage 13 and the other end of the cylinder is connected to the supply pump 27. The movement of the shuttle 38 represents the amount of fuel supplied to the injection pump and this movement is measured at 43 and the signal supplied to a processing circuit 42 which also receives a demand signal 44. The movement of the shuttle is halted by the gradual closure of communication between the one end of the cylinder 37 and the injection pump. This is achieved in the example by a passage 34 moving out of registration with a port 35 or 36 of the distributor 11. The rate of flow of fuel from the pump 27 to the cylinder is controlled by a fuel control device 41 the setting of which is determined by the processing circuit 42 which strives to ensure that the actual amount of fuel supplied to the injection pump is equal to the desired amount. <IMAGE>
