Abstract
Apparatus for detecting the presence of a specific substance in a gas stream comprises a sensing chamber (10) receiving a test paper (16) which is subject to colouration when contacted by a specific substance in a gas in the chamber (10), means (24,26,28,30,32, 34) generating a light beam and directing it toward the test paper (16) in the chamber (10), a light beam sensing device (42) responsive to the extent to which the test paper in the chamber undergoes colouration in response to exposure to the specific substance, an amplifier (48) connected to the device (42) and providing an output voltage proportional to the colouration of the test paper, and differentiator (56) and non-linearity compensation means (60) connected to the amplifier (48) for providing an output signal which is an instantaneous indication of the concentration of the specific substance. A beam splitter (34) divides the light beam into two separate beams, one directed toward the test paper (16) in the chamber (10) and the other toward a variable optical density filter (36). A second light beam sensing device (46) is responsive to the transmittance of the filter (36). The amplifier (48) is responsive to the two light beam sensing devices (42, 46) for providing an output which is a function of the ratio of the light sensed by the devices (42, 46) irrespective of light source intensity variations. Before each measurement, zeroing is performed via reset amplifier 50 controlling the position of filter 36. <IMAGE>
