Abstract

An electromechanical device for measuring the distance of an object and particularly for measuring the radial clearance of rotating component 5 from a casing 8. The device has a probe 4 which is movable by a motor 14 by turning a screw- threaded spindle 3 until a "contact" signal is generated and sensed by a detector unit 13. An absolute angle encoder 11 is provided for monitoring the angular displacement of the screw-threaded spindle necessary to move the probe from the initial position to the "contact" position, the monitored value being proportional to the distance to be measured. The value of the angle encoder 11 is fed into a store 15 and the motor 14 is reversed whenever the detector unit 13 senses a "contact" potential. <IMAGE>
