Abstract

A personal environmental conditioning system to control the temperature environment of a small space containing one or a small number of persons, e.g. an aircraft cockpit, comprises a pack (26) containing a closed circuit refrigeration system having refrigerant circulating therein, a pump (28) for conducting environmental conditioning fluid, e.g. a water/glycol mixture, circulating in an external circuit (16), means for exchanging heat between the refrigerant and the environmental conditioning fluid and means for controlling the operation of the refrigerant system such that the refrigerant can be caused to selectively abstract heat from or supply heat to the environmental conditioning fluid. Preferably, the external circuit (16) is in heat exchange relationship with the evaporator (14) of a compression- condensation refrigeration system. The temperature of the evaporator is controlled by a condenser by-pass valve (17) which directs a variable proportion of the refrigerant from the compressor outlet directly to the evaporator. <IMAGE>
