Abstract

In a sliding-vane machine, which may be a vacuum pump, a rotor (12) carrying the vanes (21) is disposed eccentrically in a bore (13) of a stator (14). A pair of stator end-walls, at least one of which is constituted by a (preferably spring-loaded) plate (25 or 26), abut the ends of the rotor. The or each plate has limited freedom of angular movement about a pin (32) so that it can be held by the rotor (owing to friction) in sealing contact with either the wall of the bore (13) or a liner (15). <IMAGE>
