Abstract
A clutch for engaging a driving member (10) with a driven member (20) automatically upon application of torque to rotate the driving member in either direction and for disengaging automatically upon interruption of the torque and slight rotation in the opposite direction, includes a mechanism (42-60-76) for developing high frictional drag upon initial rotation of the driving member to effect clutch engagement, and low frictional drag thereafter to conserve power. The mechanism may comprise a cam follower (38) provided on an axially movable sleeve (34) and engageable with camming surfaces provided on a pair of concentric cylinders (42, 60) of which the inner one is rotatable relative to a fixed ring (24) under the control of a coiled spring (76) having its ends accommodated in slots in the concentric cylinders. When the driving member (10) begins to rotate, the sleeve (34) is urged leftwardly by the effect of the cams against the action of a spring (40) to mesh interengageable teeth (32, 36) thereby to transmit driving torque to the member (20) from the driving member (10). <IMAGE>
