Abstract

A levelling device of the kind adapted to locate points in the same horizontal plane has a fluid-filled flexible tube 1 with a valve 2 at each end, which comprises a spring 17-loaded manually operable cap 8 loosely supporting a valve stem 12 which in the closed ("storage") position shown in Figure 2a closes the tube by means of an O-ring 13. In the open ("in use") position, the cap is fastened 26, 27 in a depressed position so that the stem is lowered and the O-ring does not seal and so allows the passage of air during a levelling operation; however, if the fluid rises too far it raises a float 11 on the stem to bring the O-ring back to a sealing position. The tube includes a transparent portion 3 with a horizontal sighting block 4 slidable therealong. <IMAGE>
