Abstract

In order to obtain the distance of a reflecting point in an optical transmission medium such as a break point 13 in an optical fibre 1, use is made of the property that when the beam of a direct current driven semiconductor laser 2 is directed through the medium to the point and is then reflected back into the laser through the transmission medium 1 the result is a frequency modulated beam, the modulation frequency having an inverse relationship with said distance. The fundamental frequency in the frequency modulation may be determined by a spectrum analyzer 5. The transmission medium may be air, the reflecting point being a distant object. <IMAGE>
