Abstract
A fibre optic terminal (1) for use with a bidirectional optical fibre (6) including an optical receiver (2) which is positioned adjacent an end (5) of the optical fibre so as to receive light (8) emitted therefrom, and an optical emitter (4) so arranged as to emit light (7) from a position intermediate the optical receiver and the end of the optical fibre onto the end of the optical fibre. In alternative embodiments the detector may be annular with an emitter in the centre (Fig. 3 not shown), or with light introduced into the centre via a further light guide (Figs. 6, 7, 8 & 9 not shown) or the emitter may be affixed to the end of the light guide (Fig. 4 not shown), or the light guide may contain a grounded layer of semiconductor material. In another embodiment the emitter is formed in a semiconductor substrate which also forms the optical receiver. <IMAGE>
