Abstract

Vibration produced in an internal combustion engine during normal operation is detected at 1, and a corresponding electrical signal is produced and stored at 9, 10 and 11. Meanwhile, the engine is continuously monitored, and the onset of, and vibration of the engine during, knocking are detected and a corresponding electrical signal is produced. Then the signal corresponding to normal operation of the engine is instantaneously substracted at 12 from the signal corresponding to knocking in the engine to produce a resultant signal in which contributions due to background engine noise during knocking are suppressed. The signal stored is produced from the output signal of the detector 1 by utilizing a voltage controlled oscillator 9 which produces an output signal having a frequency at the detector output frequency and a storage device 10 which detects the peak of the detector output signal during normal operation, the outputs of the oscillator 9 and the device 10 being combined at 11 to provide a signal which is applied to the subtractor 12. <IMAGE>
