Abstract

The valve is characterized by a valve housing having inlet and outlet ports 36, 38 therein and a valve carriage 140, 142 movable within the housing from a first, retracted, position to a second, flow-interdicting, position in response to an axially directed force imparted thereto by a valve actuating shaft 42. The valve carriage has valve elements 44A, 44B movable from a first, retracted, position to a second, sealing, position with respect to the valve carriage. The actuating shaft has a collar 168 thereon adapted to cooperate with a block member having a roller thereon. The block is itself movable within the housing with respect to the carriage from a first to a second position. The block has an abutment surface thereon adapted to engage the abutment surface on the collar in a force- transmitting relationship when the block is in the first position to transmit an actuating force imposed on the shaft to the carriage to displace the carriage within the housing from the first to the second position. With the carriage in the second position, the block is in adjacency to a recess defined within the housing and displaces in response to continued application of an actuating force to move out of engagement with the collar and into the recess. With the block received within the recess, continued application of an actuating force is transmitted directly to an actuating wedge 152 to thereby move the elements 44A, 44B from the retracted to the sealing position. <IMAGE>
