Abstract
In a method of placing an elastomeric annular piston seal (19) beyond an irregularity (22) in the wall of a bore (14) without damaging the seal, the seal (19) is partially accommodated in a groove (28) on the operable diameter portion (26) of the piston (15) so that when the piston (15) is inserted into a stepped bore (11) the seal (19) moves freely past and is placed beyond an aperture (22). When the seal (19) is beyond the irregularity in the form of the aperture (22) it is moved out of the groove (28) and into its operable position by relative movement of the piston (15) past an abutment (37) which engages the seal (19) and moves it out of the groove (28) and into its operative position as shown. <IMAGE>
