Abstract

A metal such as a Ni or Co based superalloy is coated with an alloy barrier layer which reduces the outward migration of carbides, prior to aluminising. The barrier layer is preferably a Ni or Co based alloy containing 5-15% Cr and may be applied by electroplating, plasma spraying, electrophoresis, vapour deposition or by powder coating. The aluminising is preferably effected by halide pack diffusion.
