Abstract

1471304 Coating superalloys GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 10 May 1974 [29 Aug 1973] 20863/74 Heading C7F Ni-base and Co-base superalloys are coated with 50-80 wt. per cent Co 20-50 wt per cent Cr by vacuum deposition, followed by a coating of Al and subsequent heat-treatment to allow the Al to diffuse into the Co-Cr coating. The Al coating is preferably applied by vacuum deposition but may also be deposited by pack cementation wherein a mixture of inert oxide filler, e.g. Al 2 O 3 , a halide salt, e.g. NaF, KF, NH 4 F, NH 4 Cl, and a source of Al, e.g. Al powder, is placed in a retort and heated. Gaseous Al halide forms which reacts with the surface to deposit Al. The first coating is preferably 1-7 mils thick, the second 0À1-3 mils, and the heat-treatment takes place in He or Ar above 950‹C.
