Abstract

A pile fabric is manufactured using a needle 12 and at least one looper 11. The yarn tension is respectively decreased and increased in alternate needle cycles whereby a loop is retained on the looper to form a pile loop 16, 16c in first cycles and is pulled off the looper by the increased yarn tension to form a locking loop 16a 16b in second cycles. This enables single pile fabric or double pile fabric (with looper 10) to be manufactured at will, and changeover from single pile fabric to double pile fabric can take place without stopping the machine. <IMAGE>
