Abstract

A valve actuator 421 carried by the piston 413 opens a gas inlet valve 409-411 in an axially movable contra-piston 403 when the piston is in the region of its top dead centre position. By moving the contra-piston 403 towards and away from the piston 413 the running speed and/or power output of the motor can be controlled. The valve actuator 421 is itself borne for axial movement relative to the piston 413 and is controlled in such movement by a cam 420 the movement of which is synchronised with the movement of the piston, and which preferably is embodied in the proximal end of a connecting 416 rod by which the piston is linked to a crank shaft 417. <IMAGE>
