Abstract

A fuel injection pump for an internal combustion engine, comprises a constant-stroke reciprocating pumping piston 2 reciprocable by a push-member 3 and angularly adjustable by a toothed rack (not shown) in mesh with a pinion coupled to the piston. A base member 4 is interposed between the piston 2 and the push-member 3 and is slidably mounted within the pump body. Additionally, the base member 3 forms a retainer for a biassing means 5 for the return stroke of the piston and carries a valve 10 which controls, via orifices 6, 7, flow from a first space 8, adjacent to the said toothed gearing, to a second space 9. The base member is movable with or linked to the push-member and comprises a hollow, substantially bell- shaped portion opening at 16 towards the said second space 9, the valve being coaxial with the base and constituted by a resiliently deformable disc 17 which obturates the opening 16 in a position of rest and in an undeformed condition. <IMAGE>
