Abstract

1277775 Fuel injection pumps; spray carburetters J H GRAFFMAN 15 Aug 1969 [23 Aug 1968 6 Dec 1968] 40828/69 Headings F1A and F1B The pumping chamber 15 of a fuel (e. g. petrol) injection pump for feeding a spray carburetter receives fuel from an inlet 7 through an inlet valve 9 having a lost-motion or frictioned connected with a reciprocating pumping piston 3. In the embodiment shown, the valve 9 co-operates with an annular seat 12 on the piston 3 and is movable away from the seat by an amount determined by the clearance between a transverse pin 14 fixed to the piston 3 and a transverse hole 13 in the valve 9. Fuel which does not pass to the chamber 15 returns to a tank through a line 38. The piston is reciprocated electrically or by a motor driven eccentric 33 acting via a piston-rod 18, 19. The return stroke of the piston 3 is performed by a spring 35. To provide for automatic stroke adjustment the rod 18, 19 is variable in length due to the interposition of an adjustably pre-loaded spring 22. The mean position of reciprocation is adjustable. In a second embodiment Fig, 2 (not shown) the piston is sealed by a diaphragm (104) and the valve is disposed in the cylinder head facing and in frictional contact with the piston (103), whereby the valve tends to follow the piston reciprocations.
