Abstract

Relates to a method and apparatus for the traversing of strand material, such as glass strands, as they are being wound. The method involves passing the strand along the continuous and generally helical groove of a free-wheeling rotating cam and traversing the strand within the groove as the cam is rotated by the strand passing thereover. The cam is rotated by the strand such that the linear speed of the groove surface is about equal to the speed of the strand passing over it. Apparatus for accomplishing this result includes a cam member (14) having a continuous and generally helical groove (52) on its outer surface (50). This cam member is mounted to be free-wheeling, is rotated by the strand passing thereover without the need of a positive motor drive, and is spaced from and reciprocated bodily relative to a wound package. Employment of the method and apparatus of the present invention substantially reduces the frictional drag on the strand normally encountered when employing conventional traversing and winding systems and produces a rounder strand than is possible with these traverse systems. <IMAGE>
