Abstract

In the coating of paper strip by applying a coating to one side thereof whilst applying, either simultaneously with or immediately before the coating, a moistening agent to the other side to prevent distortion of the strip, the strip 1 is fed over a roller 3 and moistening liquid is applied thereto in the form of a fine spray or mist from nozzles 8 and 12 in such a way that at least part of the mist passes into the entry gap 6 between the roller and the strip, the strip being coated on the reverse side at 2. In an alternative arrangement (Figure 1, not shown), spray nozzles (5) direct the mist onto the roller 3 upstream of the gap. <IMAGE>
