Abstract

A bit assembly for a wire wrapping tool has a cylindrical bit 14 rotatable within a sleeve 12. A longitudinal channel 22 in the bit extends between an aperture 38 in the sleeve and a notch 36 in its end, from which an inclined slot 30 containing jaws 32 extends to tangential with a longitudinal bore 18 centrally or eccentrically in the bit 14. Wire is inserted into notch 36 along channel 22 until it projects at 52 from aperture 38, pulled transversely into the jaws 32 partially cutting the insulation 56, and the feed end 54 led away through a recess 40 in the sleeve end. Rotation of bit 14 with a terminal post received in bore 18 will first tighten the wire in jaws 32 to sever the insulation, then sever the free end 52 with the edge of aperture 38, and finally wind the stripped wire round post 60. The sleeve 12 may be longitudinally slidable on the bit 14, and carry a leaf spring which enters channel 22 to clear it. <IMAGE>
