Abstract
A connector 10 for use with a flat ribbon cable 12 containing a plurality of optical fibers 14, 16 supported in a flexible matrix includes: substantially flat housing members 18, 20 having a rear opening corresponding in size and shape to a flat cable to be received, anchoring means 42 for anchoring the cable, and passageways through the housing for the individual fibers to be received and anchored within fiber retaining members 22, 24 such that the fiber ends are accessible at the front of the housing to be coupled to fibers within a mated connector 78. The fiber retaining members are in turn adapted to be received into an abutting relationship within an alignment means 26, 28 which maintains the mated fibers in axial alignment when the connectors are mated. The housing also has associated therewith a latching means 68, 70 on both sides of the flat housing adapted to corresponding members of the mated connector 78 to align the respective members and to maintain the abutting relationship when the respective connectors are mated. <IMAGE>
