Abstract

In a process for producing a permanent magnet from a powdered mixture of iron oxide or compounds forming iron oxide and one or more oxides or oxide forming compounds of Ba, Sr and Pb the mixture is sintered in an oxygen-containing atmosphere in which the partial pressure of oxygen is maintained at a value complying with a prescribed law, the resulting product ground and pressed into a shaped body under the action of a magnetic field and again sintered with the partial pressure of oxygen complying with the same law. The iron may be partially replaced by one or more of Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Mn and Mg. The final magnet may also contain oxides of Al, Ga, Cr, Si and Ti.
