Abstract

199,696. Kohler, C. June 23, 1922, [Convention date]. Cooling condensers, air blast for.-The condenser cooling-water of a locomotive is distributed in fine streams from perforated pipes 3 arranged on a tender 1 on to horizontal perforated partitions 7 arranged in one or more compartments 4, 5, and is cooled by currents of air flowing in the same direction as and in contact with the streams. The air currents may be produced by one or more suction fans 8 at the rear of the vehicle. The air enters through louvres 10 at the sides of the compartments and through openings 11 at the front end, the latter openings utilizing the effect of motion of the vehicle. The cross-section of the structure approximates to that of the clearance gauge, as shown in Fig. 2. If desired there may be one cooling compartment only, with a suction fan on a shaft at right angles to the axis of the vehicle. Where two compartments are provided, the water cooled in the upper compartment may be passed to the lower one for further cooling. The cooled water is collected in a tank 13. The vehicle may be open at the top, but is preferably partially covered to exclude soot, dust, &c. The artificial draught may be created by compression fans at the front, in which case the louvres 10 are situated below the partitions 7 and serve as outlets.
