Description

Jan. 19,- 1932. c. w. WILLIAMS APPARATUS FOR COOLING AND VENTILATING AUTOMOBILES Filed April l, 1929 M/XVWNTOR A TTORNE Y Patented Jan. 19, 1932 UNITED STATES CLAUDE W. WILLIAMS, OF PAWI-IUSKA, OKLAHOMA APPARATUS FOR COOLING AND'VENTILATING AUTOMOBILES Application filed April 1,
My invention relates to the method of and apparatus for cooling and ventilating auto mobiles.
The objects of my invention are to produce an apparatus of the class described, which will be new, novel, simple, durable, cheap, efficient and of utility; which will furnish ventilation to closed automobiles free from dust, smoke and small particles; which will .10 cool the air entering such closed automobiles for ventilation; which will particularly be adapted for use in closed automobiles. and in crossing deserts, sandy and parched and arid areas; which will be easily installed and easily manipulated and easily maintained, which will be eflicient for all of the purposes for which it is intended.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction, novel features, and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying one-sheet drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, shape, weight and minor details of construction, within the scope of my invention, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or principle of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
The novel features, invention and other objects will be more fully shown in the specification, claims, and accompanying one-sheet drawings, of which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the opening for ventilating means for closed car; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view through the upper part of the car showing air cleaning and cooling means; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the partition showing the felt covered baifles and their divisions and outer edges. 7
Like characters of reference designate like parts in all the figures.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I will describe one embodiment thereof as follows:
The body of an automobile 1 is shown for the purpose of showing the application of the device thereto. For the use in a closed 1929. Serial 1%. 351,689.
car my device is located immediately under the top'2 of an automobile. I provide a pan or'box 3 susceptible of holding Water and moisture adapted to be inserted under said top 2, said box or pan 3 has sides 4, 5 and rear end 6. These are preferably slightly curved upwardly at'their tops 7 so as to cause any surplus of water when tilted to one side or the end to be thrown back toward the center part c and prevent the same from being allowed to go over the top down the side edges of the car. The front portion of thebottom of said pan 3 inclines slightly upwardly, to a height equal substantially. to one-half ofthe height of said sides4and5 and said rear end 6. A central groove 8 extending longitudinally from adjacent the front of the pan 3 to the rear thereof is'provided for introducing and distributing the moisture and for assisting in giving equable division of ventilating surface. ,A' plurality of cross ribs 9 extends between and are united to the upstanding side edges 4 and 5. Said cross bars or ribs are covered with felt 10, or some other suitable fibrous material for holding water or moisture, over which the air coming in at intakes 11, 12, passes. Over said groove 8, the felt 10 depends loosely from said ribs 9. into said groove 8, so that any moisture in the groove M will contact said felt 10. This may be clearly so seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The top 2 above said pan 3 is adapted to have depending therefrom and attached thereto baflies 13. These are also adapted to be covered by felt 14, or the like, if desired. Said bafiies depending from the top 2 are preferably adapted to be staggered with relation to the baffles or divisions attached to the under pan or box 3. It will-be observed that-I do not have said baffies and pan extend to the rear of said top but simply adjacent the same so as to permit space for the air being introduced in said top at 11 and being conducted between said series of double baffles over said felt covered bars or strips and then permitted to strike the inside of the rear end 1 5 of said top and be thereby thrown forwardly as shown by the arrows under said top where it enters the closed car ridingchamber 16 adjacent the 1013 front at 17 A second division 18 extends from the rear of said top to the front of said top 19 except that an opening 20 is provided therebetween for opening into the tonneau portion, and an adjustable closing door 21 is provided for opening and closing said opening 20 as desired. If it is desired said intake opening may be screened for the purpose of shutting out dust, sand and the like but this is not necessary. Said intake openings 11 and 12 are preferably located above visor 22 and these may be adapted to be entirely closed or partially opened and partially closed or entirely opened.
In operation it will be seen by those fa 15 -1niliar with the art to which my invention pertains that water may be introduced into .said pan 3 by a hose inserted into either opening 11 or 12, and that the air entering through the openings 11 and 12 will be intro duced between the bottom of the pan or box 3 and the inside of the top 2 and will proceed rearwardly along the line indicated by the arrows over the baifles and will play on the .felt cover-ed baflles theretofore saturated with water for retaining moisture; that when such air passes the last baliie and strikes the in side of end 15 it will be thrown backwardly as indicated by the arrow between the bottom of pan or box 3 and the second division 18 and conducted forwardly to opening 20 where door 21 will be opened partially or wholly and there let the cleaned moist laden cooled air into the passenger chamber 16 inside of the automobile.
It will also be seen by those familiar with the art to which my invention pertains that in cold weather the air can be similarly introduced by a small opening at 11 and 12 and be circulated between said baffles and between said bottom of said pan or box and second division 18 down into the passenger chamber of the automobile and be warmed by the time it reaches the occupants of the car instead of being introduced for ventilation directly into the tonneau and causing a direct cold draft on the passengers.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with the top of an automobile having an opening at its front end and having downstanding felt covered baffies spaeedly disposed thereon, of a receptacle rigidly disposed beneath and adjacent to said top, said receptacle adapted to receive and .hold a liquid, a plurality of upstanding felt covered bafiles spacedly disposed within said receptacle and staggered with relation to said 'downstanding baflies, a horizontal partition beneath said receptacle, said partition having an opening into the passenger compartment of said automobile adjacent its front and having means for closing said opening, as 65 and for the purposes described.
CLAUDE, W. WILLIAMS.
