Spindles.-The automatic adjusting device for compensating for wear or expansion &c. in poppet valve stems or other reciprocating or intermittent thrust mechanism described in Specification. 170,509 is simplified by the omission of the upper member therein provided with limiting abutments. The modified arrangement comprises only the following essential parts, namely, two nut members 4, 5 screwed upon a third member 1 with a spring 12 interposed so that when the parts 4, 5 are rotated in unison together they approach and recede relatively. The parts 4, 5 are mounted on screw threads 2, 3 of opposite hand and the spring tends to thrust the elements 4, 5 axially apart, and also prevents any substantial relative rotation thereof by engaging both of them positively, as shown at 13. A floating thrust block 8 or the like may be interposed, as shown, between the parts 5 and 9, e.g. the tappet head and valve stem, to prevent any turning effect of the part 9 on the part 5. The screw threads on the several parts may be interrupted, portions only of threads being used in the form of inclined surfaces having the same effect as a screw thread.
