Roller mills.-In a multiple pair roll precrusher for sugar-cane mills, one of the rolls is driven directly by a tail-bar or the like and the other roll of the same pair and the other rolls of other pairs are in spur-gear connection with it. The cane is fed along a table 1 to a pre-crusher consisting of a number of pairs of rolls 2, 3 and 4, 5 of which the roll 3 is driven by means of a tail-bar 6 and drives the rolls 2, 4 through spur gearing 9, 10 and 12, 13 respectively, the roll 5 being driven from the roll 4 by wheels 15. The rolls 2, 5 can move relatively to the rolls 3, 4 against springs 11, 14 or against hydraulic rams or the like. The rolls 2, 3 are grooved and a scraper 16 is provided, while the rolls 4, 5 may be of the Krajewski or figured type. In an arrangement in which both pairs of rolls are of the Krajewski type, the cane after passing through the first pair of rolls falls on to a feed table or lattice to be fed between the second pair of rolls. The pre-crusher may be arranged at substantially the same level as the main mill and the broken cane fed thereto by an elevator.
