Abstract
197,405. Kinman, T. H. Feb. 11, 1922. Thermionic heterodyne receivers.-A self-heterodyne detector valve is arranged to produce supersonic resultant oscillations or beats, and the circuits are designed to render the self-oscillation frequency independent of the received frequency. As shown in Fig. 1, the aerial is coupled to an oscillatory circuit 11, 12 tuned to the incoming frequency and connected between the grid and filament of the valve, 6. A circuit 13, 14 tuned to the local frequency is connacted to the valve anode and is coupled to a coil 7 in the grid circuit. Supersonic resultant occillations, which may be of higher frequency than the local oscillations, are transferred for amplification and reception by the coupling 8, 15. The inductance 11 is preferably of low value and the capacity 12 high. In a modification the circuit 11, 12 is omitted and the aerial is coupled to the coil 7. The anode coil 8 may be connected in the anode circuit in parallel with the coil 13. The tuned mode circuit 13, 14 may be replaced by a variometer, and the valve may oscillate without external reaction coupling. In the circuit shown in Fig. 2, the grid coupling-coil 7 is arranged in parallel with the aerial inductance. Specifications 137,271 and 162,097 are referred to.
