Abstract
Resins are obtained by the interaction at a temperature above 120 DEG C. of aromatic hydroxy compounds, such as phenols and naphthols, with methylene chloride in the presence of ammonia or of substances which produce ammonia. Usually two or more molecules of ammonia are employed for each molecule of methylene chloride. Other bases, such as sodium hydroxide, may be added to facilitate the reaction. According to the example, phenol is heated for some hours with methylene chloride and aqueous ammonia at a temperature of 150 DEG C., a yellow resinous product being obtained.
