Abstract

Resinous compounds are prepared by the reaction of aromatic sulphochlorides upon the non-resinous condensation products of phenols with aldehydes, particularly phenol-alcohols. According to examples:-(1) the cresol alcohol prepared from commercial cresol mixture and formaldehyde is dissolved in dilute caustic soda lye and treated with an equimolecular quantity of o- or p-toluene sulphochloride in benzene solution (2) commercial cresol mixture is condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of o- or p-toluene sulphochloride or benzene sulphochloride, and the product is dissolved in dilute caustic soda lye and treated with a benzene solution of toluene sulphochloride. The products resemble natural resins and are soluble in benzene, acetone, &c.
