Abstract

Derivatives of the resinous condensation products from phenols and formaldehyde are obtained by introducing in place of acetyl, benzoyl, &c. radicals as described in the parent Specification, the radicals of valeric, bromvaleric, cinnanic, salicylic, mondelic, &c. acids, whereby products having medicinal properties are obtained. Or the resins may be condensed with aromatic amines, phenols, or aminophenols, or their carboxylic or sulphonic acids or other derivatives, through the agency of compounds which introduce a linking radical, the products obtained being of the type a \sZ-c-\sYb1, where a indicates the residue of the parent resin, b1 the amine or phenol residue, while c represents the linking radical, which may be -CO-, -COCO-, -CH2CO-, -CH2CH2-, &c. In the above processes other aldehydes may replace formaldehyde. According to examples:-bromvaleric and cinnannic esters are prepared by heating the resin from phenol and formaldehyde with the acid chlorides; the resin from cresol and formaldehyde is treated with phenol and phosgene in caustic soda solution giving a resin difficulty-soluble in alcohol; instead of phenol, mixed cresols or naphthols may be used; the resin from phenol and formaldehyde is treated with phenol, ethylene bromide and caustic soda solution, or with 2 : 5 : 7-aminonaphthol sulphonic acid, ethylene bromide, and caustic soda solution; the last-mentioned product couples with diazo compounds to form azo dyes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to the use for closing the hydroxyl groups of compounds possessing "certain valuable properties and activities," the use in the second-mentioned process of bodies having colouring, tanning, or medicinal properties, the use of the radicals -CH2CH2CH2-, -COC6H4CO-, or -CS-, as linking radicals, and to the treatment by the process of the parent Specification of resins derived from aldehydes other than formaldehyde. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
