Relieving-mechanism.-A bearing for preventing side play in the centre rod of an assay, chemical or bullion balance when raised or lowered to put the beam out of, or in to, operation comprises a self-adjusting, parallel, ball or roller bearing substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A triangular tapered collar A<1> is supported on the centre rod A<2> and engages wedges C' which are depressed by a spring D' so as to press balls or rollers B into the angles of a triangular column A and thus prevent side play as the centre rod is moved up or down. A similar bearing, not shown, is provided at the lower end of the column.
