Pistons; pistons, cooling; cross-heads. - The piston 22 of a double-acting Diesel or other internal-combustion engine has two piston-rods 3, 3a, which are formed hollow for the inlet and outlet of cooling fluid, for the piston. Each piston-rod is in communication with a pipe 10<a>, sliding in a stuffing-box in an inlet or outlet chamber 25<a>, which may be arranged to oscillate. The chamber 25a has a drip-cup 21 and may be connected to a chamber 14 forming an air cushion. Alternatively the chambers 25a are stationary and the piston-rods are secured to a bridge 8<a> on the cross-head, formed with extensions to which the pipes 10<a> are rigidly secured. Passages in the extensions make communication between the pipes 10<a> and the piston-rods. The piston-rods may be integral with the piston, as s'hown, or may be attached by screwing or otherwise, and one piston-rod may be fitted with an extension 19. The piston may be in one piece, with an orifice permitting access to the interior, or may be in halves which may engage by a spigot and socket joint, as shown, packed by copper, wire or otherwise. In the latter case the halves of the piston are formed with central projections 15, 16 which screw together. Baffles may be arranged in the interior of the piston, which may be in the form of perforated discs 18 resting on flanges and pressed apart by a spring 20.
