Abstract

The partial alkaline saponification of cellulose acetate threads, films, or fabrics, to facilitate drying, is effected by means of substantially cold solutions of caustic alkali of 2 to 15 per cent strength, the reaction being retarded and controlled by cooling to low temperatures (below 0 DEG C.), or by adding alkali metal salts to the solution, or by coating the goods with an insoluble film of soap. The material may be impregnated with the solution and then drained, squeezed, or whizzed so as to leave on the material only sufficient alkali for the required saponification, or the material may be left in the solution until sufficiently saponified and then removed and washed or neutralized. Mixed goods containing cellulose acetate and cellulose threads may be treated by the process. Specification 20672/10 is referred to.ALSO:The partial alkaline saponification of cellulose acetate threads, films or fabrics, to facilitate dyeing, is effected by means of substantially cold solutions of caustic alkali of 2 to 15 per cent strength, the reaction being retarded and controlled by cooling to low temperatures (below 0 DEG C.), or by adding alkali metal salts to the solution, or by coating the goods with an insoluble film of soap.
