Abstract
193,839. Johns, C. B., and Clark, J. O. Feb. 21, 1922, [Convention date]. Sand, distributing on wheel tracks.-A heating device for the end of a sand pipe of a locomotive or like vehicle comprises cap members attached to the sandpipe and spaced by a tubular member surrounding the sandpipe and heat imparting means such as an electric resistance between the tubular member and the pipe, the end of the pipe being protected by a tapered nut. On the end of the sand pipe 15 is a casing comprising a cap 16 screwed to the pipe, a distance tube 18 and a loose cap 17 held in position by lock nuts 19, 20. The heating element comprises coils of wire 27 connected to terminals 30 and separated from the inner tube 15 by insulation and from the outer tube 18 by a wrapping of fire-proof material such as asbestos. The casing is held by a clip 24 secured to an arm 22 from the vehicle.
