Abstract

193,161. Stott, J. H. Aug. 22, 1922. Laminar springs.-A laminated vehicle spring is mounted so as to give easy springing when working alone during the earlier portion of its deflection and stiffer springing during the later portion when at one or more predetermined points it is controlled at one end by a continuous stop fixed to the chassis, and at the other end by a continuous stop connected to the chassis by parallel swinging links so as to follow the longitudinal movement of the spring. In a modification, a continuous stop may be carried by the spring itself at one or both ends thereof. The stops are of considerable length, such as a quarter or third of the length of the spring. The stop AB is fixed to the chassis J and the stop CD is connected to the chassis by parallel links CE, DF so as to follow the longitudinal movement of the spring from its unloaded position, Fig. 1, to the fully-loaded position, Fig. 3. In the modification shown in Figs. 6 and 8, the stops AB, CD are at one end attached to the spring eyes, and at the other end to points nearer the encastrement G by adjustable links BK, DH. The stops in this modification may be in two or more portions hinged together so as to come into operation at different points in the deflection, each hinge joint being connected to the spring by links similar to BK, DH; rubber-covered stops or spring buffers P, N on the chassis may come into action just before the position of maximum deflection as shown in Fig. 8. The stops may be straight or curved and may be formed with side flanges. Specifications 4412/07, [Class 52, Furniture &c.], and 14113/13, [Class 8 (i), Air and gases, Compressing &c.], are referred to.
