Abstract
192,591. Owens, J. S. Jan. 20, 1922. Gas analysis.-An apparatus for use in estimating suspended impurities in air &c., comprises means for causing a known volume of air tn strike a glass &c. plate at such a high velocity that the suspended particles are caused to strike the plate and the moisture in the air is caused to condense on the particles prior to striking, and thereby cause the particles to adhere to the plate which is subsequently examined under a microscope. The gas is drawn through a tube T to an orifice A in the shape of a slot formed by the edges of two semicircular plates held in position by a ring R. The ring is recessed on its upper surface to form a seating for a microscope cover glass which is held in position by a plug C carrying a spring &c. The air is drawn through the apparatus by attaching a pump of known capacity to the connection E, the ring R being formed with air-channels N. The dust &c. deposited on the cover glass is examined under a microscope having an eyepiece with a suitable-graticule to facilitate counting the particles. The tube T may have a lining U of wet absorbent material so that the air may contain sufficient vapour to condense around the suspended particles.
