Abstract

192,089. Deschamps, J. J. Jan. 21, 1922, [Convention date]. Blast, applications of.-To facilitate physical and chemical reactions in porous masses of material subjected to the action of fluids under pressure or undergoing distillation, evapcration or chemical action, variations of pressure are produced in the chamber containing the material under treatment by producing pulsations in two or more fluids supplied to the chamber, the pulsations produced in the fluids being of different amplitude or periodicity or of the same periodicity and out of phase. The invention is stated to be applicable to blast furnaces, but is shown in Fig. 1 as applied to a container in which two gases or vapours supplied through conduits A, B act upon a mass of material, and the gases resulting from the reactions escape through a conduit G controlled by a valve H. The conducts A, B are provided with valves C, D which are opened and closed at intervals to produce pulsations in the manner stated above. The container may be provided with any number of valve-controlled inlets and outlets. The gases may be supplied to the container by injectors, in which case valves which are opened and closed intermittently to produce the pulsations are provided in the pipes supplying the injecting-fluid. Fig. 2 shows a rotary disc valve J provided with apertures K of different size and adapted to open and clcse the fluid-supply conduit so as to produce variable pulsations in the container. When it is desired to produce rapid pulsations, a pivoted oscillating plate M, Fig. 4, or a piston P, Fig. 5, may be provided in a chamber communicating with the container or conduits connected thereto. The pulsations may be set up by the displacement of the fluid serving to operate a whistle, syren or the like. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also modifications in the method of and apparatus for producing pulsations wherein the supply to and exhaust from the container may be operated intermittently, or the valves in the inlet pipes may be operated simultaneously. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
