Charcoal. - An apparatus for revivifying activated charcoal, in its place of use, comprises a container 1 divided into chambers A, B, C by a perforated plate 2 and a plate 3 carrying U-shaped pipes 5. The chamber C is subdivided by a partition 4, and provided with inlet or outlet pipes 11, 12 for admitting a heating or cooling medium, e.g. steam or water, to the pipes 5. The charcoal is supported on the plate 2 and surrounds the pipes 5, the pipes being centred in the perforations in the plate. A collar or bonnet 7 with notches 8, Fig. 2, surrounds each pipe and covers the perforation through which it passes, thus permitting the free passage of gas between the chambers A and B, and preventing the charcoal from packing around the perforations in the plate 2. The apparatus may be used for carrying out the process claimed in Specification 240,126. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following modifications. The charcoal may be placed inside the pipes 5, the heating or cooling medium being circulated around them, or a water jacket may be used, instead of the pipes, for heating and cooling the absorbent material. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
