Abstract

17,662. Lyon, A. A. Dec. 17. Electric-lamp and flash signals.-In a selfcontained signalling-lamp, more particularly for use on board ship, signals are controlled by a Morse key disposed within the preferably rectangular body of the lamp, the operating-button of the key being in a recess within the normal outline of the body. The recess may be provided with a removable cover, and means are provided to prevent ingress of water splashes past the button. Means are also provided to vary the divergence and intensity of the light beam, preferably without altering the position or intensity of the source of light. The lamp comprises a rectangular body 1 divided into two compartments by a partition 2, one containing cells 3, and the other a Morse key 8 and lamp 17, the key being mounted on an horizontal plate 7 which slides into place. The leads 28 from the battery to the key pass through an air-tight rubber packing 27 compressed by screw-threaded insulating-bushes 25, 26. The operating-button 12 is housed in a recess having a hinged cover 14, and, to prevent access of water splashes, has a depending sleeve 13 surrounding an upstanding tube 10 with a turned-back flange, through which the button stem 11 passes freely. The lamp has a parabolic or other suitable reflector 16 carried by a bracket 15, and is itself carried by a bracket 18 which may be moved by a screwed rod 20 to adjust the relative position of lamp and reflector. The back and front of the lamp are formed as doors 4, 5 respectively. The door 5 has a glass plate 29 in front of the light and a flap hinged at 30, held in the closed or open positions by clips 31, 32. The flap has a small central aperture 33 which may be fitted with a lens, and a rotatable plate 34 with several apertures or stops in which various materials may be fitted to give beams of various intensities or divergencies. A handstrap may be provided for carrying purposes, and the doors are preferably hinged and retained closed by sliding bolts without loose parts. The lamp bulb may face forwards, as shown, or may face the reflector. Specification 22,426/11 is referred to.
