Abstract

11,803. Brodie, J. L. Aug. 16. Helmets; linings.-A helmet or head shield is formed with a strong outer shell of metal fitted with a shock-absorbing lining loosely attached, so that the shell can be removed from the head, leaving the lining behind. The shell a is made considerably larger than the head and, when intended for military use, is stamped from a bullet-proof material, such as manganese steel. The lining is spaced from the shell by resilient pads m and is secured in position at the crown by a single fastening-device, such as a split rivet r. The inner skull-cap or lining is formed, as shown in Fig. 5, of three layers d, e, f of felt, absorbent cotton-wool or lint, and canvas respectively, and the lower edge is stiffened by a band g of fibre or other suitable material. Ventilation holes k are cut through the three layers. The canvas f is covered with American cloth h, cut and arranged in the usual way for helmets and stitched to the felt at i. Slits are cut in the American cloth to form loops l which hold the resilient pads f. When intended for military use, the shell is coloured to make it less visible.
