Magnetic compasses.-In portable compasses for taking the exact bearing of an object, the hinged cap-like lid B has an opening D with a sighting- line H, and has adjustably attached to it in the sighting-line a mirror A, Fig. 1, for reflecting inverted numerals marked on the compass card E; or the mirror A, Fig. 11, is adjustably attached to the body of the compass in a similar position, the mirror in either case coming within the lid when the lid is closed. The mirror may be fixed by a cross-bar or by spring arms, and may be hinged or otherwise and detachable or otherwise.
