Abstract

10,983. Rainey, P. M. Aug. 18, 1914, [Convention date]. Differential speed indicators.-In a method of starting the rotation of a distributor 24 in isochronism with a distributor 13 at a distant station, the motor 23 is at first driven by impulses sent from the distant station, and the tuning-fork 21 or other local device for driving the motor 23 is then adjusted manually with the aid of stroboscopic or other means until it attains the proper period for driving the motor 23 isochronously with the motor 10, and the control of the motor 23 is then switched over from the line circuit to the local circuit. Means are provided for obtaining and maintaining the proper phase relation between the two distributors. The motor 10 at the controlling-station is driven by a fork 11 in known manner and carries a distributor arm 14, which moves over segments 15 alternately connected to batteries 16, 17, so that positive and negative impulses are sent to line L alternately. At the controlled station, the magnets of the motor 23 can be connected by a hand-switch 50 either to the contact 62 of the fork 21 or to the contacts 45, 47 of a polarized relay 41, controlled by the line relay 20. The fork 21 has a screw 26 for adjusting its period and carries a pair of shutters 36, through which a stroboscopic disk 35 on the distributor shaft can be observed. A correcting-magnet 31, controlled by a relay 40, operates as described in Specification 3985/15, [Class 40 (iii), Telegraphs, Electric], to increase the rate of vibration of the fork when the magnet is energized. The method of synchronizing the two distributors is described.
